Nigel - we worked together when you were a newly appointed General Surgeon at Whipps Cross. We also became friends until we lost touch some time ago. I was very saddened to learn of your death. You were an excellent surgeon , caring about your patients and an excellent communicator with them. You were a high achiever and took that strength and your many others into the very top of senior management in the NHS. You were deeply committed to the NHS and in your work and conduct exemplified the very best that the NHS provides. You were also great company and I enjoyed the times that you stayed with my family in Wiltshire. When I last worked in London I stayed with you at your flat that you were so proud of in the Docklands and I have many happy memories of chatting with you on your balcony overlooking the Thames including about your beloved cricket and of course 'your boys' of whom you were so proud. We were not in touch much when you went to Colchester but I know that you took with you the high standards, professionalism , commitment and leadership qualities that you have always had and willingness to support others. The world, your family, friends and your local community has lost a very special person. As well as very fond memories of you I am thinking about your family and friends who must be very sad at your passing. Well done Nigel - you did more than 'your bit' for the world which tragically has lost you far too early.
Nigel was the first (of eight) chief executives that I have worked for at Colchester Hospital, and I have very many fond memories of him. When the Colchester Daily Gazette reported his death, he was described as "a man of the people" which was spot-on. He was a high-achiever, eg consultant surgeon, hospital chief executive, but he was always "one of us" and a man of great humanity. He was an Essex boy done good, and all the better for it. I can remember having many enjoyable conversations with him about his beloved Hammers, and he was always very supportive of me. The Gainsborough Wing at Colchester General Hospital is just one part of his legacy. The people of Colchester and north east Essex have many reasons to be grateful for Nigel Offen. A great bloke who will be missed by many. My condolences to his family and friends.
